Op-Ed: Democratic Socialism, A Political Alternative

When Zohran Mamdani announced that he was running for mayor, not many people were in favor of it. Many billionaires took it upon themselves to spend as much of their own money as possible to ensure that Mamdani lost New York City’s mayoral race. Fortunately, Mamdani secured the win and became New York City’s first Muslim, South Asian mayor who campaigned as a democratic socialist.

The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) is the largest socialist organization in the United States, with over 90,000 members and chapters in all 50 states. DSA is not a political party but a socialist and political organization that uses “legislative” and “direct action” to fight for the empowerment of the working class.

Aside from the Democratic and Republican parties, which many people seem tired of voting for the lesser of two evils, DSA offers a clear alternative for the kind of progressive change some of us are desperately looking for in a declining, racist America.

More Than Exhausting: The U.S. Political Landscape

In 2025, the Trump Administration cut many essential government programs and funding that benefit U.S. citizens. It gets more than exhausting to see, day by day, how not only this country but this world applauds President Donald Trump for his actions.

During the 2026 World Cup draw, Trump was awarded a “peace award” by FIFA as if he had done anything to merit a good recognition other than facing repercussions for tearing hardworking families apart under the guise of “protecting Americans.”

When NYC’s mayor-elect met with Donald Trump at the Oval Office on November 21, all eyes were on him, and their meeting was framed as “cordial” by media sites. Matt Bernstein, a make-up artist, activist, and supporter of Mamdani on social media, praised Mamdani for standing up to Trump, defending democratic socialism, advocating for working people, while also calling out Israel’s genocide.
Aside from the praise, critical key factors to look out for are how Mamdani will work to bring the promises he made during his campaign into a reality such as freezing rent, creating a network of city-owned grocery stores, free public buses and lowering the cost of childcare because even if you are from any state outside of New York we can still root for people who deserve a better quality of life where people aren’t just surviving but truly living.

The Democratic Socialists of America in the RGV

DSA spans across multiple cities in the United States; there is a chapter in the RGV called DSA RGV. DSA RGV works endlessly to support and uplift social justice efforts happening right in our local community.

While it would be great to have our own Zohran Mamdani in Texas, we do need more progressive leaders who are willing to not bend over for MAGA and Trump, which are infecting what little justice and independence we have left as a country.

Currently, DSA RGV is endorsing Etienne Rosas for Congress in TX-34 as Rosas supports “Medicare for All, opposes ICE, and is committed to a just, affordable, and sustainable future through a Green New Deal.” Rosas believes that the government should work for the people, not for businesses.

You do not have to join the DSA RGV to support a real change for this country, as there are many other organizations in the RGV that you can stand with. It is up to you to find something that aligns with your values and the change you want to see in this world!
