Our Story

Trucha began as a grassroots multimedia platform among creatives led by co-founders Josue Ramirez and Omar A. Casas Jr., who held a common goal: to uplift the stories, culture, and social movements of the Rio Grande Valley. Trucha shows the power, creativity and the joy of our RGV community over the mainstream portrayal of our home.

 

Today, our mission continues through movement journalism, documentaries, cultural programming, local partnerships, and building a strong foundation of storytellers.

Our Organization

Trucha is based in McAllen, Texas in the Rio Grande Valley along the US Mexico frontera. We are the only multimedia nonprofit to exist in the 956 operating as a non profit 501-C3 grassroots publishing, creative and cultural organization.

 

We support the next generation of RGV storytellers and artists by providing a space to share their creativity and push local movements forward.

What does Trucha mean?

Trucha is a part of the phrase “Ponte Trucha” which translates from Spanish to “Stay alert,” “Be aware,” or “Know what’s going on.”

What is Trucha’s mission?

To build a strong foundation of storytellers and share our gente’s stories throughout the borderlands of the RGV and Mexico through movement journalism, documentaries, artistic opportunities, and local partnerships.

What programs and services does Trucha offer?

Trucha offers programs to the Rio Grande Valley y la frontera in the areas of journalism, video and the arts. We offer opportunities like fellowships, workshops, training, commissions, residencies, exhibitions, and events.

Who is Trucha’s Audience?

Our audience is 956! Two-thirds are Millennial women between the ages of 18 and 32, followed by Millennial men, Gen Z women, and Gen Z Men. We are bilingual and majority “Latinx,” specifically Mexican or Mexican American.

What is Trucha’s Impact?

In 2024, 104 community stories were published and 60 local creatives were hired. We provided 40 RGV artists with professional development skills and training and gave 40 aspiring journalists the opportunity to share their stories through our platform. A total of $657,605 was invested back into our Rio Grande Valley community!
