956 Photographer Benigno Hoyuela

How did you begin your journey in photography?

When I was little, my sisters were into 90s music, and I would look at their magazines. I became inspired by the pictures in them, and my sisters would model for me. My dad got me a camera when I was 12, and from there I started liking photography.

What interests me most is real life moments like street photography, candid moments, and the mundane parts of life.v

What are some of your favorite spots to photograph in the 956?

Josefa Garcia Park, Estero Llano Grande State Park, and I like exploring Brownsville or quaint areas like downtown Harlingen and old spots in McAllen like the buildings around main street.

How has the Valley landscape influenced your art?

Usually, when I wanted to take photos, I wanted fairy tale vibes, and I would try my hardest to do that, but eventually I just adapted to the brown dirt and cactus, and I adapted to the western theme, and I just fell in love with it and then just worked with it.

So, you were featured on the Whataburger Instagram, how was that like?

That was so fun, and it was not the intention going in! When they asked me, I messaged Brianna, “It’s happening!” Just the feeling that other people other than my followers were seeing my work was cool.
