Things to do in the RGV: Group Hangs
Story by Trucha
Edited by Abigail Vela and Nina Alegre
It is no secret that the RGV has been changing over the last 30 years, from the construction of the Valley’s tallest building, the Chase Tower, to some parts of the RGV becoming carbon copies of each other following the car wash, drive-thru coffee shop, and fast food chain formula.
However, over the last couple of years, people have also been asking themselves the same question: What is there to do in the RGV?
Some might say nothing, but those people obviously don’t know how to use Google. So, if you are looking for things to do in South Texas and want to find some local clubs to join, you’ll find them here:
1. Let’s Stay Creative
Let’s Stay Creative was created by local photographer, Audrey Barerra, for creatives to network and meet people. Let’s Stay Creative hosts monthly meetups, photo walks and events, collaborating with restaurants and boutiques across the Rio Grande Valley and San Antonio. So, if you’re interested in enhancing your modeling or photography skills pop on by. If you want to find more photography meetups check out Artist United.
2. McAllen Adult Sport Leagues
If you enjoy playing kickball, volleyball, softball, or basketball, the City of McAllen has Adult Athletic leagues you can join! Also, check out the RGV Bandidas, the only RGV roller derby league!
3. Entre Film Center
Entre Film Center is an artist-run community film center in Harlingen, TX that screens films, hosts festivals, workshops and a lot more. If you’re into watching movies, making films, and learning about them you may have just found your people. Some other places to check out are Movie Night in Mission, TX and Wes-Mer, the only drive-in movie theatre in the RGV.
4. Social Dancing in South Texas
Wanna learn how to cha-cha or two-step? There are many dance studios in the Rio Grande Valley that host FREE and paid classes. Rhythm Room, Brownsville Salsa and Bugalu Dance Co. are just some to mention. Plus, Hillbillies in McAllen, TX, also hosts FREE country dancing lessons.
5. Walkin’ Gals RGV
If you are looking to make new IRL friendships in the Rio Grande Valley while being active, then you might want to join Walkin’ Gals. Each walk consists of 1 mile to 2.5 miles! Bring a friend or come solo— the goal is to make new connections!
6. Gaming Clubs
The McAllen Public Library hosts an MPL Gaming Club where adults come together to play games such as D&D, and Magic: the Gathering. You can also find more events at Kaboom Comics and MYTH.
7. RGV Biking
The Rio Grande Valley might not have mountains but we do have an Off-Road Bicycling Association, check them out here. The group focuses on biking on off-road trails like Brownsville’s Monte Bella, Harlingen’s Arroyo Trails, Mission Trails, and more. You can also join local bike rides with McAllen Critical Mass.
