We don’t know anybody in the Biden administration and we were here before the Biden administration, and we were doing most of our work during the Trump administration. It doesn’t matter who is in power in the White House what we’re concerned with is making sure abortion is accessible for people from the RGV and for people from South Texas.

My name is Zaena Zamora my pronouns are she/her.

I am Cathy Torres and I use she/her/ella pronouns.

Frontera Fund is an abortion fund that serves the Rio Grande Valley
and deep South Texas, we provide financial and practical support for anybody who is seeking an abortion in South Texas and anybody from the Rio Grande Valley who has to seek an abortion elsewhere.

The bake sale, we call it “Bake-A-Thon” is one of our many projects to raise money for our annual “Fund-A-Thon” fundraiser. It usually ranges in the springtime and we do that as a direct push to raise funds to directly fund abortion in Rio Grande Valley. This is about our fourth or fifth time hosting a bake sale in general with Frontera Fund. Last year we raised close to three thousand dollars. I was anticipating maybe $500 but no. We raised three thousand dollars last year.

We had Leen sort of organize the first one, one of our lead volunteers, Aileen Garza, she started organizing the first bake sale. Our first three were in person, 2020 comes around, we had a lot of events lined up in person and then boom, Ms.Rona (COVID-19) came in to invade us. So we decided we don’t want to like not raise any funds this year, we don’t want to not have a bake sale, so we shifted to a contactless bake sale.

So this is our second year doing a no contact bake sale, where bakers from all over the valley
basically bake out of their homes. It’s pretty free rein at everyone’s own capacity, make their own menus and prices, and to pick up delivery. Just the main thing is that everyone is safe and there’s minimal contact as possible, and surprisingly these last two a contactless bake sales that we’ve had have honestly been the most the most successful.

We’re at like seventy six hundred dollars and our goal is ten thousand so this last week that we’ve been pushing this Bake-Athon has really really gotten us close to our overall ten thousand dollar goal. So either way we’re making more than a thousand dollars with bake sales. Who would have thought you know, making lemon cake and cookies would get us to this point.

Another event we’re having is on April 30th at 7 o’clock p.m., we are having a virtual loteria night. Wo we contacted different local businesses and organizations, some other Texas abortion funds, and we got prizes from them, and it’s going to be a lot of fun. It’s a $5 minimum donation and you can find how to access it through our Instagram and facebook.

If you want to get more involved with Frontera Fund you can go ahead and go to our website fronterafundrgv.org and there’s a volunteer sign-up so you can tell us that you’re interested in volunteering.

We’re part of the Texas abortion fund Coalition and we have our bill currently in the Texas legislature called Rosie’s Law. So what Rosie’s law would do is it would restore health insurance coverage and Medicaid coverage for abortion care in Texas

Legislators are just trying to just seep into our care, into our ability to access care. That impacts our, you know, right to privacy and other things. We need to normalize our conversation around abortion. Abortion is healthcare, it’s normal, it’s something that people do, want to do, or need to do. But in terms of our lens on why abortion is important and why it should be accessible is because we deserve to choose. To choose to parent, to choose to not parent, to raise families, to plan our futures unapologetically with dignity and with safety. So in order to do so and in order to nurture ourselves and to plan accordingly for the decisions we want to make, we need to be able to have access to abortion care.

Everybody loves someone who’s had an abortion, and it’s true whether a person knows it or not
someone you love in your life has had an abortion, because abortion is completely normal.

Abortion is healthcare, it is part of reproductive healthcare, and we talk everyday to people trying to navigate getting abortion care for themselves and they are just doing what they feel is best for themselves and their family.

Politicians need to do things that give us the freedom and the right to be able to get all manners of reproductive health care including abortion and they need to stay out of those personal decisions because no one lives your life but you and you have to have the say of whether or not you choose to become a parent or not.
