Feeling the RGV Holiday Spirit!

Edited by Abigail Vela

While my favorite season is fall, winter holds many special memories for me. Two of my most comforting ones happened not long after I moved to the Valley, both times. They were the two times I had experienced snow in the Valley, and the second time came after some difficult experiences when it was difficult to feel at peace. The winter felt joyous as a 3-year-old but miraculous as a teenager, as if the Valley were telling me I was safe.

A Note on Family

Familial gatherings can be a lot for anyone, but it’s important to remember you are your own priority. You might have a family member who is bigoted or otherwise disrespectful. Taking the energy and time to educate them can pay off, but it is not your responsibility, and should only be done if they are willing to listen. Also, never be afraid to step away and spend some time with a chosen family. They matter every bit as much.

The Gift of Giving

You will likely be exchanging gifts with family, friends, and even co-workers, and I hear a lot of people say they’re bad gift givers. If you are having trouble deciding on a gift, good fallbacks are always food, clothes, and cash, but anyone who loves you will appreciate any present that shows you’ve been listening to their problems, good or small.

Local Escapes

Whether it’s showing family members your favorite spots or just trying to get anywhere else, there’s no shortage of cozy places to spend some of your wintertime. Be that cafe, bookshop, or bar.

A Winter Reminder

Remember, everybody, regardless of religion or financial status, the wintertime is a great reminder that we all have the ability to love, learn, and be kind. We just have to choose to be. May you all feel the holiday spirit this year!
